WHO WE ARE
GFVC SA (Federal Global Fashion Value Chain of South Africa) is South Africa's national implementation arm of the continental GFVC AFRICA economic system — the national governance body that oversees the implementation of local programmes and coordinates all stakeholders in that space, including Smart GFVC Africa.
We develop and grow the local supply chain base, and operationalise GFVC Africa's high-road, smart industrial strategy locally — designing, piloting, and scaling industrial architecture that delivers jobs, skills, value retention, and economic sovereignty in South Africa.
As the first operational ecosystem and host of the SMART GFVC GATEWAY™, GFVC SA translates policy into production. It implements GFVC Africa's own strategy.

We are correcting value leakage.
We are coordinating the entire fashion value chain — from soil to shelf — to end the isolated, uncoordinated operations that have drained value from South Africa's economy and left its backbone unprotected. We collaborate with all actors within the value chain, including key stakeholders.
From Exploitation to Decent Work and Shared Standards
We are correcting the conditions that have held the backbone back.
We are bringing trade unions, industry regulators, employer associations, and national government together to build shared standards for decent work across the cut-make-trim sector — ensuring every worker within South Africa's value chain, regardless of origin or status, is protected, valued, and given a pathway to advance. No one who builds this economy should be left behind.

From a Narrow Fashion Industry to a Continental Industrial Economy
We are correcting the misdefinition of the industry.
What was narrowly understood as a fashion industry is, in truth, a continental industrial value chain economy — and GFVC SA exists to ensure its backbone — its workers, artisans, and enterprises — share in its growth. THE SA FASHION VALUE CHAIN
The scale of the opportunity — and the cost of inaction. One integrated value chain spanning primary production, manufacturing, textile machinery, technology, and retail; the closures and job losses that have hollowed it out; and the socioeconomic reality GFVC South Africa exists to change.

- Edcon closed 253 stores by 2018; its final COVID collapse put ~22,000 direct jobs at risk
- Stuttafords — a 159-year-old institution — shut down in 2017
- Factory employment crashed from ~186,000 to ~112,000 during COVID; formal clothing employment down ~15% (2019–2023)
- TFG pivoted to e-commerce (Bash) from strength — ~280 planned store closures as strategy, not decline
